Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. They became rock icons, due to the success of their second album Nevermind (1991), which became one of the best selling records of all time, and are often regarded as one of the most influential and important rock bands of the modern era. The band is also best known for popularizing the grunge genre in the 1990s, along with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Nirvana lasted for only three studio albums, and broke up after Cobain killed himself in April 1994.

Connections to The Offspring

  • Both The Offspring and Nirvana are highly regarded as one of the most successful bands of the 1990s.
  • Nirvana's debut album Bleach was released on June 15, 1989, the same day as The Offspring's self-titled debut album.
  • The Offspring released their third album Smash on April 8, 1994, which happened to be the same day that Kurt Cobain was found dead.
  • Samuel Bayer, who directed the music video for "Gotta Get Away", directed the music video for one of Nirvana's biggest hits "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
  • Kevin Kerslake, who directed the music video for "The Meaning of Life", directed the music videos for four Nirvana songs, such as "In Bloom", "Come as You Are", "Lithium" and "Sliver".
